Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Newell PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Newell PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Newell PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Newell PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Newell PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Newell PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Newell home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Newell PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Newell PA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Newell PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Newell PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Newell healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Newell PA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Newell PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
