Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Newry PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Newry PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Newry PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Newry PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Newry PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Newry PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Newry home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Newry PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Newry PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Newry PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Newry PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Newry healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Newry PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Newry PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
