Sonographer Occupation Description

Orwigsburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Orwigsburg PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Orwigsburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Orwigsburg PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Orwigsburg PAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Orwigsburg PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Orwigsburg home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Orwigsburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Orwigsburg PA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Orwigsburg PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Orwigsburg PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Orwigsburg healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Orwigsburg PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Orwigsburg PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
