Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Parkesburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Parkesburg PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Parkesburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Parkesburg PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Parkesburg PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Parkesburg PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Parkesburg home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Parkesburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Parkesburg PA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Parkesburg PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Parkesburg PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Parkesburg health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Parkesburg PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Parkesburg PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
