Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Point Pleasant PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Point Pleasant PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Point Pleasant PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Point Pleasant PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Point Pleasant PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Point Pleasant PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Point Pleasant home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Point Pleasant PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Point Pleasant PA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Point Pleasant PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Point Pleasant PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Point Pleasant healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Point Pleasant PA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Point Pleasant PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
