Sonographer Occupation Summary

Pottstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Pottstown PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Pottstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Pottstown PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Pottstown PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pottstown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Pottstown home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Pottstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pottstown PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pottstown PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Pottstown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Pottstown medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Pottstown PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pottstown PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Pottstown, Pennsylvania

Pottstown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States about 40 miles (55 km) northwest of Philadelphia and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Reading, on the Schuylkill River. Pottstown was laid out in 1752–53 and named Pottsgrove in honor of its founder, John Potts. The old name was abandoned at the time of the incorporation as a borough in 1815. In 1888, the limits of the borough were considerably extended. Pottstown is the center of a productive farming and dairying region.

Pottstown's iron and steel interests were once very extensive. There were large rolling mills, furnaces, nail works, textile mills, bridge works, agricultural-implement works, boiler and machine shops, foundries, and manufactories of bricks, silks, shirts, hosiery, etc. In 1900, 13,696 people lived there; in 1910, 15,599; in 1920, 17,431; and in 1940, 20,194. The population was 22,377 at the 2010 census.

Modern-day Pottstown is on land originally deeded to William Penn.[3] Germans, Swedes and English were among the area's first European settlers. After establishment of the first iron forge in 1714, Pottstown's fortunes became tied to the iron industry.
