They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Rebersburg PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Rebersburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Rebersburg PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Rebersburg PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Rebersburg PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Rebersburg home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Rebersburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Rebersburg PA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Rebersburg PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Rebersburg PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Rebersburg health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Rebersburg PA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Rebersburg PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
