They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Most practice in Rouzerville PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Rouzerville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Rouzerville PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Rouzerville PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Rouzerville PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Rouzerville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Rouzerville PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rouzerville PA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Rouzerville PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Rouzerville PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Rouzerville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Rouzerville PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Rouzerville PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
