Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Russell PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Russell PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Russell PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Russell PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Russell PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Russell PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Russell home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Russell PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Russell PA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Russell PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Russell PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Russell healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Russell PA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Russell PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Johnson was born in Ashley, Pennsylvania, on November 10, 1924.[1][2] His parents were Russell Kennedy Johnson (1901–1932) and Minnie Wenonah Smink-Johnson (1902–1976). Johnson was the second-oldest of six children. His siblings were Kenneth (1925–2012), David (1926–1976), Paul Wesley (1932–1933), Lorraine Johnson-Crosby (1928-2015), and Marian L. Johnson-Reeves (1923–2010). Their father died of pneumonia in December 1932; the youngest of the siblings (Paul Wesley Johnson) died not long after. Minnie Johnson later remarried to Thomas S. Lewis. As a teenager, Johnson attended Girard College, a private boarding school for fatherless boys, located in Philadelphia.[1]

After graduating from high school, Johnson enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet. On completing his training, he was commissioned a second lieutenant. He flew 44 combat missions in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a bombardier in B-25 twin-engined medium bombers.[3]
