Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Sadsburyville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Sadsburyville PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Sadsburyville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Sadsburyville PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sadsburyville PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Sadsburyville PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Sadsburyville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Sadsburyville PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sadsburyville PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Sadsburyville PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Sadsburyville PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Sadsburyville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Sadsburyville PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sadsburyville PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
