Sonographer Work Summary

Sayre PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Sayre PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Sayre PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Sayre PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sayre PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sayre PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Sayre home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Sayre PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Sayre PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sayre PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Sayre PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Sayre healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Sayre PA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sayre PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

In 1900, 5,243 people lived there; in 1910, 6,426 people lived there, and in 1940, 7,569 persons made their homes in Sayre. The population was 5,587 at the 2010 census.[3]
