Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Schaefferstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Schaefferstown PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Schaefferstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Schaefferstown PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Schaefferstown PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Schaefferstown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Schaefferstown home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Schaefferstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Schaefferstown PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Schaefferstown PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Schaefferstown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Schaefferstown medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Schaefferstown PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Schaefferstown PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania

Schaefferstown is one of the oldest towns in Lebanon County (which was formed from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1813), being at least a century older than the county itself. It is the main town in Heidelberg Township. Although the exact date of the first settlers is unknown, it is certain that they settled here before 1725. Those first settlers were German Jews. Many of them were skilled craftmen and traders. They disappeared, however, when non-Jewish German settlers started moving into the area. The old burial ground was situated about a fourth mile south of Tower Hill and almost a hundred yards east of South Market Street in Schaefferstown. The Jewish settlement was known as the Lebanon Trading Post.

Brendle Farms, Philip Erpff House, and Rex House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bomberger's Distillery, also listed, was located near Schaefferstown.[1] The buildings of the distillery were demolished. The Schaeffer House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011.[2]

It is home to Fountain Park, which is the oldest Chartered Waterworks still in operation in the United States. It drains southward into the Cocalico Creek (a tributary of the Conestoga River) and is served by Routes 419, 501, and 897.
