Sonogram Tech Work Description

Sligo PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Sligo PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Sligo PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Sligo PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Sligo PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sligo PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Sligo home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Sligo PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Sligo PA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sligo PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Sligo PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sligo medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Sligo PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sligo PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
