Sonographer Occupation Description

Spartansburg PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Spartansburg PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Spartansburg PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Spartansburg PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Spartansburg PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Spartansburg PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Spartansburg home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Spartansburg PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Spartansburg PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Spartansburg PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Spartansburg PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Spartansburg healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Spartansburg PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Spartansburg PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
