Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Sturgeon PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Sturgeon PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Sturgeon PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Sturgeon PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sturgeon PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Sturgeon PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Sturgeon home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Sturgeon PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sturgeon PA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sturgeon PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Sturgeon PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Sturgeon medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Sturgeon PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sturgeon PA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
