Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Swarthmore PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Swarthmore PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Swarthmore PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Swarthmore PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Swarthmore PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Swarthmore PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Swarthmore home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Swarthmore PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Swarthmore PA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Swarthmore PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Swarthmore PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Swarthmore healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Swarthmore PA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Swarthmore PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
