Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Swengel PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Swengel PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Swengel health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Swengel PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Swengel PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Norman F. Douty

Douty was born in Central Pennsylvania on January 14, 1899. He came to faith in 1910 and was licensed to preach in 1919. After graduating from seminary, he served as a pastor in several churches before taking up an itinerant ministry throughout the USA.

He was called to serve as president of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1944, but the original urge to preach induced him to leave his college post in 1945. He first took up conference work, then a pastorate. He is best known for having authored a detailed refutation of "the false doctrine of limited atonement," and several other theological treatises. Though he was Baptist, he also authored works on the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He described himself as "a moderate Calvinist, a traditional Baptist, and a convinced premillennarian... but a lover of all the saints, whatever their classification may be".[1] Rev. Douty sold his collection of 4,000 books to Cornerstone University for $4500, payable in installments, giving the university's John C. Miller Library a substantial jump start.[2]
