Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Tobyhanna PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Tobyhanna PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Tobyhanna PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Tobyhanna PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Tobyhanna PAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Tobyhanna PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Tobyhanna home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Tobyhanna PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Tobyhanna PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Tobyhanna PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Tobyhanna PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Tobyhanna medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Tobyhanna PA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Tobyhanna PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania

In the late 1800s, the Tobyhanna and Lehigh Lumber Company operated a lumber mill, clothes pin factory and silk mill in what was then called the Village of Tobyhanna Mills. In September 1900, N S Brittain, a prominent resident of Coolbaugh Township and cashier of the East Stroudsburg Bank, purchased virtually the entire village, consisting of over 30 dwellings and 120 acres of the land but none of the former mill equipment. The lumber company sold the land, depleted of its lumber, for USD $10,000. The Monroe Water Supply Company had purchased most of the lumber company's property, over 32,000 acres, in March 1899. The site was transitioning from forest products to the harvesting of ice. [2]

From about 1900 to 1936, Tobyhanna lakes were the site of active ice industries. The ice was cut from the lakes during the winter and stored in large barn-like structures. During the rest of the year, the ice was added to railroad boxcars hauling fresh produce and meats destined for East Coast cities.

In 1912, Tobyhanna had a railway station, telegraph, and post office. The federal government acquired land within Tobyhanna that became the Tobyhanna Military Reservation, later Tobyhanna Army Depot, which was used as an Artillery training ground.[1][3] Edward B. Reed, in The Field Artillery Journal (January–March 1917), described Tobyhanna based on his experiences with the Yale Batteries during their training:
