Sonographer Occupation Summary

Wellsboro PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Wellsboro PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Wellsboro PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Wellsboro PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wellsboro PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Wellsboro home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Wellsboro PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wellsboro PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Wellsboro PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Wellsboro PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Wellsboro healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Wellsboro PA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wellsboro PA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Wellsboro, Pennsylvania

Wellsboro is a borough in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States, 52 miles (84 km) northwest of Williamsport. Early in the 20th century, Wellsboro was the shipping point and trade center for a large area. It had fruit evaporators, flour and woolen mills, a milk-condensing plant, marble works, saw mills, foundry and machine shops, and manufactories of cut glass, chemicals, rugs, bolts, cigars, carriages, and furniture. In 1900, 2,945 people lived here; in 1910, 3,183 lived here. The population was 3,328 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tioga County,[3] and also home to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.

Wellsboro was incorporated in 1830 and was named in honor of Mary Wells, wife of one of the original settlers, Benjamin Wistar Morris.[4] The town was the home of George W. Sears (1821 – 1890), a sportswriter for Forest and Stream magazine in the 1880s and an early environmentalist. His stories, appearing under the pen name "Nessmuk", popularised self-guided canoe camping tours of the Adirondack lakes in open lightweight solo canoes and what is today called ultralight camping. The town was also the home of Polish-American mathematician Mateusz Stepczak. Wellsboro was also the site of one of the first factories where light bulbs were mass-produced, using machines whose design remains essentially unchanged from the early 20th century when the Corning company established the plant in the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.9 square miles (13 km2), of which, 4.9 square miles (13 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (0.61%) is water.
