Ultrasound Technician Job Description

West Finley PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in West Finley PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

West Finley PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with West Finley PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in West Finley PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local West Finley PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your West Finley home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask West Finley PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the West Finley PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of West Finley PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with West Finley PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the West Finley healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their West Finley PA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the West Finley PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
