Westmoreland City PA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Westmoreland City PA, it’s time to begin the process of picking a college. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate education to become a qualified professional. And since some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each college in order to assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? Most prospective students will start by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Westmoreland City PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Westmoreland City PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Westmoreland City PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Westmoreland City PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Westmoreland City PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Westmoreland City PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Westmoreland City home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Westmoreland City PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Westmoreland City PA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Westmoreland City PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Westmoreland City PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Westmoreland City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Westmoreland City PA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Westmoreland City PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
