Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Wheatland PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wheatland PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Wheatland PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Wheatland PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Wheatland PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wheatland PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Wheatland home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wheatland PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Wheatland PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Wheatland PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Wheatland medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Wheatland PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wheatland PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
