Wiconisco PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wiconisco PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Wiconisco PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Wiconisco PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Wiconisco PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wiconisco PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Wiconisco home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Wiconisco PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wiconisco PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wiconisco PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Wiconisco PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Wiconisco medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Wiconisco PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wiconisco PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
