Sonographer Occupation Description

Wysox PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wysox PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Wysox PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Wysox PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Wysox PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Wysox PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Wysox home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Wysox PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Wysox PA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Wysox PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Wysox PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Wysox health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Wysox PA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wysox PA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
