Sonographer Job Summary

Exeter RI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Exeter RI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Exeter RI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Exeter RI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Rhode Island or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Exeter RIAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Exeter RI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Exeter home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Exeter RI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Exeter RI area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Exeter RI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Exeter RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Exeter health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Exeter RI residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Exeter RI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
