Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Alamo TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Alamo TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Alamo TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Alamo TN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Alamo TNAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Alamo TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Alamo home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Alamo TN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Alamo TN area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Alamo TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Alamo TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Alamo health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Alamo TN home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alamo TN area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
