Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Helenwood TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Helenwood TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Helenwood TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Helenwood TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Helenwood TNAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Helenwood TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Helenwood home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Helenwood TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Helenwood TN area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Helenwood TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Helenwood TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Helenwood health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Helenwood TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Helenwood TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Helenwood, Tennessee

Helenwood is an unincorporated community in Scott County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 846 at the 2000 census, when Helenwood was treated as an incorporated municipality. For the 2010 census, it was a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 865.

On April 5, 1935 a dynamite explosion caused extensive damage in Helenwood, destroying fifteen homes and damaging many other homes and businesses.[6][7] One news account said that Helenwood was "literally wiped off the map."[6] There were no fatalities.[7]

Helenwood was incorporated as a town by referendum in 1997, after the state statute that set minimum criteria for municipal incorporation was amended by the Tennessee General Assembly to remove the requirement that a newly incorporating area must not be within three miles of an existing city and to reduce the minimum population for incorporation from 1,500 residents to 225. The legislation that changed the statute had been introduced by Lieutenant Governor John S. Wilder in order to allow Hickory Withe to become a municipality. Helenwood's incorporation was rescinded by state courts after the amendments were declared unconstitutional.[8]
