Sonographer Work Description

Lockney TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Lockney TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Lockney TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Lockney TX hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Lockney TXAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lockney TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Lockney home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lockney TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lockney TX area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Lockney TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Lockney TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lockney medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Lockney TX residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lockney TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
