Sonographer Job Summary

Wylie TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Wylie TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Wylie TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Wylie TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wylie TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Wylie home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Wylie TX ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wylie TX area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wylie TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Wylie TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Wylie health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Wylie TX residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wylie TX area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Wylie, Texas

Wylie is a city once solely located in Collin County, but now extends into neighboring Dallas and Rockwall Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on State Route 78 about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of central Dallas and centrally located[5] between nearby Lavon Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard.

Originally called Nickelville, reportedly after the name of the first store, it was organized in the early 1870s. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid tracks a half mile north of the original townsite in 1886. The businesses of Nickelville moved to take advantage of the railroad within the following year, and the City of Wylie was incorporated in 1887 along the right-of-way. It was named for Lt. Colonel William D. Wylie,[6] a right-of-way agent for the railroad[7] and Civil War veteran.

That same year, Wylie had given itself its name, established a post office branch, and incorporated, choosing an alderman form of government. Two years later, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway reached the town. The two railroads and the rich agricultural region of the Blackland Prairies contributed to the town's growth. In 1890, Wylie had a population of 400 and the first one-room school house was built. By 1900, it had grown to 773. In the next decade, the population tripled. Before 1920, the community had over 35 businesses, including two banks, a school, and a weekly newspaper.
