First, you have to find the right program that will provide the necessary training to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? Most potential students will begin by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. Sonographer Job Description

Cornish UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Cornish UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Cornish UT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Cornish UT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Utah or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Cornish UTAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Cornish UT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Cornish home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Cornish UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cornish UT area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cornish UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Cornish UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Cornish health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Cornish UT residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cornish UT area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
