Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Woods Cross UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Woods Cross UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Woods Cross UT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Woods Cross UT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Utah or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Woods Cross UTAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Woods Cross UT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Woods Cross home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Woods Cross UT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Woods Cross UT area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Woods Cross UT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Woods Cross UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Woods Cross healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Woods Cross UT home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woods Cross UT area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
