Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Galax VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Galax VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Galax VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Galax VA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Galax VAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Galax VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Galax home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Galax VA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Galax VA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Galax VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Galax VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Galax healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Galax VA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Galax VA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Galax, Virginia

The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Galax with neighboring Carroll County for statistical purposes. Galax is bounded to the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County.

The area that later became Galax was part of an 800-acre (320 ha) land grant given to James Buchanan in 1756 by the English Crown. The first plat map for Galax is dated December 1903;[5] The town founders selected the site for the city on a wide expanse of meadowland bisected by Chestnut Creek and sitting at an altitude of 2,500 feet on a plateau.[6] The Virginia General Assembly officially chartered the town of Galax in 1906.[7]

The town is named for Galax urceolata, an evergreen groundcover plant found throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. At the time, the plant was gathered and sold by many people in southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina as an ornamental plant; a Norfolk and Western Railway Company official suggested that the town be named for the plant.[7] The first Galax Agricultural Fair took place in September 1908, when Galax had 600 residents.[8]
