Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Ashland WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Ashland WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Ashland WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Ashland WI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ashland WIAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ashland WI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Ashland home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Ashland WI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ashland WI area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ashland WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Ashland WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Ashland health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Ashland WI residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ashland WI area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Ashland, Wisconsin

Ashland is a city in Ashland and Bayfield counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The city is a port on Lake Superior, near the head of Chequamegon Bay. The population was 8,216 at the 2010 census, all of which resided in the Ashland County portion of the city. The unpopulated Bayfield County portion is in the city's southwest, bordered by the easternmost part of the town of Eileen.

Four flags have flown over the area around Ashland: Spanish, French, English and American. Eight Indian nations have lived on Chequamegon Bay. Later settlers included European explorers, missionaries and fur traders, and more recently, Yankees who platted and developed the lands, railroaders, shippers, loggers, entrepreneurs, and other settlers. The area was part of the Northwest Territory and was subsequently part of four successive territories before becoming part of the state of Wisconsin: Indiana Territory, Michigan Territory, Illinois Territory, and Wisconsin Territory.

About the time Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World, the Ojibwe people came to the land they called Sha-ga-waun-il-ong. This term has been translated numerous ways: "lowlands", the "needle", "the region of shallow water", and where "there are large extended breakers". Each is descriptive and suitably accurate.
