Sonographer Work Description

Delafield WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Delafield WI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Delafield WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Delafield WI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Wisconsin or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Delafield WIAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Delafield WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Delafield home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Delafield WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Delafield WI area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Delafield WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Delafield WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Delafield health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Delafield WI home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Delafield WI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
