Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Oxford WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Oxford WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Oxford WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Oxford WI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Wisconsin or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Oxford WIAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Oxford WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Oxford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Oxford WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Oxford WI area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Oxford WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Oxford WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Oxford health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Oxford WI home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Oxford WI area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
