Sonographer Job Summary

Guernsey WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Guernsey WY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Guernsey WY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Guernsey WY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wyoming or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Guernsey WYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Guernsey WY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Guernsey home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Guernsey WY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Guernsey WY area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Guernsey WY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Guernsey WY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Guernsey medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Guernsey WY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Guernsey WY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
