They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Weston WY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Weston WY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Wyoming or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Weston WYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Weston WY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Weston home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Weston WY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Weston WY area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Weston WY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Weston WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Weston medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Weston WY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Weston WY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
