Tunnel Hill, Georgia

Tunnel Hill is a town in northwest Whitfield County and southern Catoosa County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Dalton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,209 at the 2000 census. The town is named for the Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel, a 1,497-foot (456 m) railroad tunnel built in the late 1840s.

The community was first known as Doe Run. It was incorporated on March 4, 1848, as Tunnelsville, and changed its name in 1856 to Tunnel Hill. Both names refer to a nearby 1,497-foot (456 m) railroad tunnel through Chetoogeta Mountain, officially dedicated on October 31, 1849 by Etowah steel-maker Mark A. Cooper on behalf of the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad.

The railroad tunnel was the first to be completed south of the Mason–Dixon line. The rail line operated during the late 1840s with passengers and freight being portaged over the mountain while the tunnel was constructed. Another tunnel next to it, completed in 1928, is still used by CSX Transportation. The original Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel is now paved for tourists to walk through; it has even more historic value, as the Great Locomotive Chase passed through it in 1862.

Villa Rica, Georgia

Villa Rica /ˌvɪləˈrɪkə/ is a city in Carroll and Douglas counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 4,134 at the 2000 census. By the 2010 census, the population had grown to 13,956,[4] an increase of approximately 238%.

Villa Rica is located in northeastern Carroll County and northwestern Douglas County at 33°43′55″N 84°55′12″W / 33.73194°N 84.92000°W / 33.73194; -84.92000 (33.731909, -84.919982).[5]U.S. Route 78 (Bankhead Highway) passes through the center of the city, leading west 6 miles (10 km) to Temple and east 10 miles (16 km) to Douglasville. Interstate 20 passes through the southern part of the city with access from exits 24 and 26, and leads east 32 miles (51 km) to Atlanta and west 55 miles (89 km) to Oxford, Alabama.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.4 square miles (37.3 km2), of which 14.2 square miles (36.9 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.4 km2), or 1.04%, is water.[4] Villa Rica sits on the ridgeline that separates the Chattahoochee and the Tallapoosa river basins. Slightly more than half of Villa Rica lies within Carroll County, and the remainder lies within Douglas County.

Waynesboro, Georgia

Waynesboro is a city in Burke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,766 at the 2010 census.[5] The city is the county seat of Burke County.[6][7] It is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area.

Waynesboro is located in Burke County, one of the eight original counties of Georgia. The city was named after General Anthony Wayne, whose daring efforts during the Revolutionary War earned him the nickname "Mad Anthony Wayne".[7]

Although European Americans lived in the area before the Revolutionary War, the town was not laid out until 1783. The city was officially incorporated in 1883 as Waynesborough. The name was changed to Waynesboro sometime after.[9] It developed as the trading and government center of the county, and is the site of the county courthouse and jail.

Winterville, Georgia

Winterville is a city in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. Since 1991, Winterville has been the only municipality located wholly within Athens-Clarke County. The population was 1,122 at the 2010 census.[5]

Winterville is located at 33°58′00″N 83°16′54″W / 33.966720°N 83.281669°W / 33.966720; -83.281669,[6] a 6-mile (10 km)–drive from the University of Georgia.[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,122 people, 485 households, and 318 families residing in the city. The population density was 431.5 people per square mile (162.6/km2). There were 529 housing units at an average density of 203.5 per square mile (76.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.35% White, 21.84% African American, 0.36% Asian, 0.27% Native American, 3.57% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 5.26% of the population.

Turin

Turin (/tjʊəˈrɪn, ˈtʊərɪn/,[2]Piedmontese: [tyˈriŋ] (listen); Italian: Torino [toˈriːno] (listen); Latin: Augusta Taurinorum, then Taurinum) is a city and an important business and cultural centre in northern Italy. It is the capital city of the Metropolitan City of Turin (an administrative division of Italy) and of the Piedmont region, and was the first capital city of Italy from 1861 to 1865. The city is located mainly on the western bank of the Po River, in front of Susa Valley, and is surrounded by the western Alpine arch and Superga Hill. The population of the city proper is 878,074 (31 July 2018)[3] while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 1.7 million inhabitants. The Turin metropolitan area is estimated by the OECD to have a population of 2.2 million.[4]

The city has a rich culture and history, being known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well known for its Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-classical, and Art Nouveau architecture. Many of Turin's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palazzi such as the Palazzo Madama, were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. A part of the historical center of Turin was inscribed in the World Heritage List under the name Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.

The city used to be a major European political center. From 1563, it was the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, then of the Kingdom of Sardinia ruled by the Royal House of Savoy, and the first capital of the unified Italy (the Kingdom of Italy) from 1861 to 1865.[5][6] Turin is sometimes called "the cradle of Italian liberty" for having been the birthplace and home of notable individuals who contributed to the Risorgimento, such as Cavour.[7]

Waco, Georgia

Waco is located in southern Haralson County at 33°42′3″N 85°11′25″W / 33.70083°N 85.19028°W / 33.70083; -85.19028 (33.700963, -85.190410).[6] It is bordered to the south and east by the city of Bremen. U.S. Route 78 passes through the center of town, leading east 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the center of Bremen and northwest 7 miles (11 km) to Tallapoosa. Interstate 20 forms the southern border of Waco and provides access from Exit 9 (Atlantic Avenue). I-20 leads east 48 miles (77 km) to Atlanta and west 98 miles (158 km) to Birmingham, Alabama.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 469 people, 189 households, and 130 families residing in the city. The population density was 291.4 people per square mile (112.5/km²). There were 203 housing units at an average density of 126.1 per square mile (48.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.01% White, 1.49% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.85% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races.

There were 189 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99.

Waynesville, Georgia

Woodbine, Georgia

Woodbine is a city in, and the county seat of, Camden County, Georgia, United States, an original county established when the state constitution was adopted in 1777.[5][6] The population was 1,412 at the 2010 census.[7]

Records in 1765 show that John Brown, John McGillvary, William Molyneaux and William Trowin petitioned English authorities for 1,400 acres (570 ha) south of the Satilla River. They were granted the land named Pile's Bluff, which historians believe to be near Woodbine.[5]

A tract of land was granted to Anton Cunning by the state in 1808. It became known as the Woodbine Plantation. Luke John Bailey purchased it in 1835 and held it through the Civil War, during which the house was burned by Union troops. James King Bedell acquired the property, constructed a new house, and restored the plantation. The railroad entered Camden County in 1893, and Bedell sold a right-of-way across his land, but required that the first rail community be named "Woodbine".[5]

Habersham County, Georgia

Habersham County is a county located in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,041.[1] The county seat is Clarkesville.[2] The county was created on December 15, 1818, and named for Colonel Joseph Habersham of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.[3]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 279 square miles (720 km2), of which 277 square miles (720 km2) is land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) (0.8%) is water.[4] The county includes part of Chattahoochee National Forest.

The highest point in the county is a 4,400-foot (1,300 m) knob less than 700 feet (210 m) southeast of the top of Tray Mountain, the seventh-highest mountain in Georgia. Habersham shares this portion of Tray Mountain, just 30 vertical feet shy of the peak's 4,430-foot summit, with White County to the west and Towns County to the north. 2.4 miles to the northeast of Tray Mountain is Young Lick (elevation 3,809 feet (1,161 m)). The Appalachian Trail runs along the top of the high ridge between Young Lick and Tray, a part of the Blue Ridge Mountain crest.

Wadley, Georgia

Wadley is a city in Jefferson County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,088 at the 2000 census. In 2010, the population count was 2,061, a decline of 1.3%. The community was named for William Morill Wadley.[4]

As of the census[2] of 2000, there are 2,088 people, 765 households, and 516 families residing in the city. The population density is 458.3 people per square mile (176.8/km²). There are 872 housing units at an average density of 191.4 per square mile (73.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.11% African American, 20.26% White, 0.14% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 1.92% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 765 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.0% are married couples living together, 31.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.23.
