Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Flovilla GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Flovilla GA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Flovilla GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Flovilla GA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Georgia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Flovilla GAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Flovilla GA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Flovilla home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Flovilla GA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Flovilla GA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Flovilla GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Flovilla GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Flovilla health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Flovilla GA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Flovilla GA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
