Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Coffeeville AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Coffeeville AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Coffeeville AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Coffeeville AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Coffeeville ALAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Coffeeville AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Coffeeville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Coffeeville AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Coffeeville AL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Coffeeville AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Coffeeville AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Coffeeville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Coffeeville AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Coffeeville AL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
