Sonographer Occupation Description

Dover DE ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dover DE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Dover DE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Dover DE hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Delaware or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Dover DEAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Dover DE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Dover home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Dover DE ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dover DE area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Dover DE health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Dover DE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Dover medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Delaware healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Dover DE residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dover DE area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Dover, Delaware

Dover (/ˈdoʊvər/) is the capital and second-largest city[4] in the U.S. state of Delaware. It is also the county seat of Kent County, and the principal city of the Dover, DE Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Kent County and is part of the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD Combined Statistical Area. It is located on the St. Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain. It was named by William Penn of Dover in Kent, England. As of 2010, the city had a population of 36,047.[5]

First recorded in its Latinised form of Portus Dubris, the name derives from the Brythonic word for waters (dwfr in Middle Welsh). The same element is present in the towns French (Douvres) and Modern Welsh (Dofr) forms. The city is named after Dover, Kent in England.

Dover was founded as the court town for newly established Kent County in 1683 by William Penn, the proprietor of the territory generally known as the "Lower Counties on the Delaware." Later, in 1717, the city was officially laid out by a special commission of the Delaware General Assembly. The capital of the state of Delaware was moved here from New Castle in 1777 because of its central location and relative safety from British raiders on the Delaware River. Because of an act passed in October 1779, the assembly elected to meet at any place in the state they saw fit, meeting successively in Wilmington, Lewes, Dover, New Castle, and Lewes again, until it finally settled down permanently in Dover in October 1781.[6] The city's central square, known as The Green, was the location of many rallies, troop reviews, and other patriotic events. To this day, The Green remains the heart of Dover's historic district and is the location of the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse.
