Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Vicksburg MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Vicksburg MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Vicksburg MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Vicksburg MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Vicksburg MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Vicksburg home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Vicksburg MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Vicksburg MI area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Vicksburg MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Vicksburg MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Vicksburg healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Vicksburg MI residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vicksburg MI area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
