Sonographer Job Description

Clawson MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Clawson MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Clawson MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Clawson MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Clawson MIAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Clawson MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Clawson home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Clawson MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Clawson MI area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Clawson MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Clawson MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Clawson medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Clawson MI home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Clawson MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
