Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Central AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Central AK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Central AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Central AK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Central AKAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Central AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Central home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Central AK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Central AK area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Central AK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Central AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Central medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Central AK residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Central AK area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    AK-12

The AK-12 is a Russian assault rifle chambered in 5.45×39mm. It is designed and manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern (formerly Izhmash)[5] and is currently the latest of the Russian AK-Pattern series of assault rifles.[6]

The AK-12 project began in 2011 by the IZHMASH factory which became part of the Kalashnikov Concern as a private venture, in an attempt to participate in the "Ratnik" trials which were held by the Russian Army.[6] It was further developed by Kalashnikov Concern, and throughout its development and evaluation stage it has received multiple modifications to meet the Russian military's standard and to address the Russian Army's concerns regarding the cost and issues in fully automatic fire of the earlier prototype models. It went through several revisions in order to improve upon the "range of defects" that were discovered on the earlier prototype models that were derived from the AK-200. These were later abandoned in favour for the proven and improved AK-400, which became the finalised model of the AK-12.

On 25 May 2010, the Russian media published a Russian Ministry of Defence statement that the AK-12 rifle was to be tested in 2011. The early prototype model (AK-200), was presented to the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during his official visit to inspect the products of the Izhmash arms manufacturing plant in Izhevsk, it was apparently a basic AK-74 (thus chambered in 5.45×39mm cartridge). The Izhmash's prototype was fitted with a large-capacity 60-round casket magazine. On the early prototype model, the traditional locations of the cocking handle, safety lever, and fire selector remained unchanged, but the AK-12's production model featured revisions to all of these features.
