Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Kaaawa HI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Kaaawa HI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Kaaawa HI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Kaaawa HI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Hawaii or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Kaaawa HIAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Kaaawa HI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kaaawa home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Kaaawa HI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kaaawa HI area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Kaaawa HI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Kaaawa HI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Kaaawa medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Kaaawa HI residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kaaawa HI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Kaʻaʻawa, Hawaii

Kaʻaʻawa is a small community and census-designated place (CDP) located in the windward district of Koʻolauloa, City & County of Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the total population for Kaʻaʻawa was 1,379.[1] In Hawaiian, kaʻaʻawa means "the wrasse (fish)".[2] From the Hawaiian spelling Kaʻaʻawa it is seen that each a is pronounced separately and distinctly, set apart by the two ʻokinas: [ˈkɐʔəˈʔɐvə] or [ˈkɐʔəˈʔɐwə].

Kaʻaʻawa is north of Kāneʻohe Bay (north of Kaʻōʻio Point, also Kalaeokaʻōʻio), and the Pacific Ocean shore here is fronted by a broad fringing reef with a narrow, but quite inviting beach (Kanenelu Beach, Kalaeʻōʻio Beach Park, and Kaʻaʻawa Beach Park). The around-the-island-highway (Kamehameha Highway, State Rte. 83) and the houses and other buildings comprising the town, are confined to a relatively narrow belt along the coast. However, a long valley extends inland. Kaʻaʻawa Valley is part of Kualoa Ranch and used for various tourist activities as well as filming. Major films and TV series incorporating significant views of the valley include George of the Jungle, Jurassic Park and Lost.

Kaʻaʻawa is located at 21°33′25″N 157°51′19″W / 21.55694°N 157.85528°W / 21.55694; -157.85528 (21.557050, -157.855148).[3] Kaʻaʻawa is north of Kualoa and directly southeast of Kahana Bay. The next place beyond Kahana is Punaluʻu.
