Sonographer Job Description

Thayer KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Thayer KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Thayer KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Thayer KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Thayer KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Thayer KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Thayer home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Thayer KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Thayer KS area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thayer KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Thayer KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Thayer healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Thayer KS residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Thayer KS area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
