Sonographer Occupation Summary

Woodway TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Woodway TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Woodway TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Woodway TX hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Woodway TXAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Woodway TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Woodway home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Woodway TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Woodway TX area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Woodway TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Woodway TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Woodway healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Woodway TX residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodway TX area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
