Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Wells TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Wells TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Wells TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Wells TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Wells TXAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wells TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Wells home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Wells TX ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wells TX area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wells TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Wells TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Wells healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Wells TX residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wells TX area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
