Stillmore GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Stillmore GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Stillmore GA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Stillmore GA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or whatever state you choose to work in.

So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Stillmore GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Stillmore home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Stillmore GA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Stillmore GA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Stillmore GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Stillmore GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Stillmore healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Stillmore GA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Stillmore GA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
