Temple GA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Temple GA, it’s time to begin the process of choosing a college. First, you need to find the right program that will provide the proper training to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program so that you can assess and compare your options. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Temple GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Temple GA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Temple GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Temple GA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Temple GAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Temple GA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Temple home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Temple GA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Temple GA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Temple GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Temple GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Temple healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Temple GA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Temple GA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
